Tucson’s nexus of history, entertainment, shopping, and nightlife are found on Historic Fourth Avenue and Downtown. The neighboring areas have undergone revitalization in the past decade and tourism has increased. Fourth Avenue, with its eclectic shops and colorful restaurants, is a popular University student stomping ground. With new shops, restaurants, and the installation of Tucson’s electric streetcar, the Avenue is welcoming crowds of all ages and interests. Meanwhile, Downtown is also undergoing a renaissance. Walk down Congress Street (downtown’s main drag) on any night and you’ll see a vibrant night life full of excitement. Much of downtown is rife with spots listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Both the Avenue and Downtown regularly host community street fairs and events, making them ideal for families, couples, and singletons, to enjoy.
Hotel CongressThe Historic Hotel Congress in downtown Tucson was established in 1919. This hotel has a wild history, including the capture of John Dillinger and his gang! Guests can still stay in the hotel and much of the original Southwest Art-Deco decor remains. The hotel also has a club, taproom, cafe, and event hall. Anyone visiting Tucson would be remiss not to stop here. It is truly a treat!
The Sunlink StreetcarNeed a way to get from Fourth Avenue to the downtown area? Tucson’s brand new electric rail streetcar is the way to go! The route starts at the University of Arizona, traverses Fourth Avenue, winds through downtown, and finally ends at the Mercado San Agustin. It’s great way to take in a view of Tucson’s major hubs.
Mabel’s on 4thOne of Fourth Avenue’s newest additions is the kitschy and adorable Mabel’s on 4th. The kitchen boutique harkens a bygone era of vintage kitchen utensils. They sell kitchenware, hand-made textiles, and locally designed tea towels. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a unique gift while shopping on the Avenue.
Antigone BooksJust down the ave. from Mabel’s is Antigone Books. This 100% solar powered bookstore is full of delightful books, gifts, and cards. It was voted Tucson’s number one independent bookstore by the Tucson Weekly.
Arizona Theatre CenterA night on the town is best spent going to the Theatre. Luckily, we have one of the best regional theatres in the country in our own backyard! ATC stages riveting theatre and their seasons range from classical works and musicals to world-premiere plays. The theatre is housed in the beautiful Temple of Music and Art downtown.
The Presidio San AgustinA recreation of the original 1775 presidio used by the soldiers and residents of that time. Docent tours showcasing life in the Presidio are available to the public. Highlights include a prehistoric pit house that was recently discovered during the reconstruction of the Presidio. Join the Living History days to witness a reenactment of what life was like in the Old Pueblo.
The Fox TheatreThis 1930’s gem of a Theater hosts a wide spectrum of concerts, events, and variety shows. When top performers come to town, you can bet they will be performing at the Fox. This building is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is celebrated for its Southwest Art-Deco decor and special “Acoustone” treatment.
